Where will Alex Pietrangelo play for at the start of the 2020-21 NHL Season

November 1st, 2020, is NHL Free Agency Day and Alex Pietrangelo is the big name player up for grabs right now. The big question is will he stay in St. Louis or go somewhere else. Here are my five NHL teams that could get Alex Pietrangelo in the 2020 NHL Free Agency period.

The first team that came into mind is the Toronto Maple Leafs. This defense has been struggling for at least a decade now. The only top defenseman that they have is Morgan Rielly. Tyson Barrie, Martin Marincin and Cody Ceci all had downhill years with the Maple Leafs this season. The only defenseman besides Morgan Rielly, that will stay on the Maple Leafs is Rasmus Sandin and Timothy Liljegren. If Alex Pietrangelo signs with Toronto, then they could have a terrific season with their defense-corps.

The second team is the Colorado Avalanche. This is a team with a young defense powerhouse in Cale Makar, Ryan Graves, Erik Johnson, Sam Girard and Nikita Zadorov. Imagine if you add Alex Pietrangelo pairing up with Cale Makar as a top pair defenseman. That’s going to be an insane top defense group and pretty much positions Cale Makar to get multiple Norris Trophy nominations under his belt with Alex Pietrangelo. In the lineup however, the Colorado Avalanche will have the potential to win some Stanley Cups and lead the Central Division under Alex Pietrangelo’s tenure with the Colorado Avalanche.

The third team is the Buffalo Sabres. This is a team that needs help with defense. Most of the defense besides Rasmus Dahlin, Henri Jokiharju and Rasmus Ristolainen aren’t depth defenseman and they don’t have a number one defenseman. Rasmus Dahlin is 19 years old and Henri Jokiharju is 20 years old.  When you add Alex Pietrangelo with Dahlin, Jokiharju and Ristolainen, I think that Buffalo are going to be close to making the Playoffs. The Sabres also would have found a top defenseman for the first time since Brian Campbell left Buffalo in 2008.

The fourth team and it has to be the Ottawa Senators, this team has two draft picks such as in the top five. If the Ottawa Senators select two defenseman Jamie Drysdale from the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League and Jake Sanderson from the United States Program. If the  sign Alex Pietrangelo from free agency, this is going to be a fantastic move for the Ottawa Senators and Thomas Chabot needs a another number one Defenseman to carry this team to be on a Playoff push. If that ever happens, your top four pairings will be on a top pair will be Thomas Chabot and Alex Pietrangelo. The second pair will be Jake Sanderson and Jamie Drysdale. That’s going to be the best top four defense group in the Eastern Conference and possibly make a run at the playoffs in the next two to three years.

The last team is the Chicago Blackhawks. This is an interesting one because Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook are close to retirement. Alex Pietrangelo will be an amazing replacement on Duncan Keith and Brent Seabrook’s role because when Alex Pietrangelo was at the start in his prime, he plays like Norris Trophy Duncan Keith in the early 2010s. The Blackhawks have Adam Boqvist who is giving signs of potentially being a top pair defenseman, and possibly the Blackhawks can bring a another veteran defenseman like T.J. Brodie or Brenden Dillon who can give you a ton of defense. If the Blackhawks sign Pietrangelo and other veteran defenseman’s, the Blackhawks would finish 3rd in the Central, they’re not going to be a top 3 team in the Western Conference.
