The Dodgers won the World Series last night with their 3-1 win, which ended the Rays unexpectedly successful season.
Blake Snell went 5.1 innings, allowing just 2 hits and no earned runs. Kevin Cash pulling Snell left fans thinking the decision to costed the Rays the World Series, but there’s a lot more to it than that.
With the Rays having the second lowest payroll in the league, at $38M, analytics have helped the Rays more than any other team. The Rays used the analytics all season and it worked for them. It also worked for them all postseason. It’s also not like you are just throwing in some random bullpen pitcher. You’re throwing in a top Reliever of the Year candidate, Nick Anderson.
Now he wasn’t the best in that spot. He allowed a couple of runs with a double down the line that took a bad bounce. That put runners on second and third and a passed ball scored the runner from third, and a ground ball that was thrown home but not in time scored the second runner. That made it 2-1 and the Rays never looked back.
It was the Dodgers third time around the lineup, and hitters are drastically better during their third time around. Snell also has not gone 6 innings since July of 2019. Snell would have probably not done too well even if he was left in.
Even if it was the wrong move, the Rays only allowed 3 runs that game and only scored 1 run. The bullpen only allowed 3 runs. If anything, it was the Rays offense that’s at fault here. The Rays had one run, and it came off of a home run from who but Randy Arozarena. Without Arozarena breaking the record for the amount of home runs hit in a single postseason, the Rays would not have gone as far as they did.
The bottom line is, it may have not been the right move, but it also may have not been the wrong move. They put arguably the best reliever in the game in, and luck wasn’t on his side. The Rays offense only scored one run that entire game, and that’s why they lost. Not because Cash pulled Snell.
Authors Main Point
Rays fans, please stop blaming this loss on Cash. He turned to the best bullpen in the league for a reason.
