The Patriots are not off to the greatest of starts, and it’s starting to show that New England fans are not used to being in this position. Since the lost to San Francisco on Sunday, we’ve been seeing a lot of Patriots fans talking about tanking, and perhaps the Patriots putting themselves in a position to have a top three pick during the NFL 2021 Draft. I understand that this is not the most ideal situation, but I urge Patriots fans to remember that New England is already set up fantastically for the 2021 season, and blowing up the team would only make things worse next year.
Yesterday we started seeing rumblings about the possibility of Stephon Gilmore being traded from the Patriots. We decided to throw up a poll and ask fans, if the Patriots were to lose this weekend, should Bill Belichick consider trading the current Defensive Player of the Year? I have to be honest with you, I was a little shocked by the response.
There are only two scenarios where I would say it makes sense that the Patriots trade away Gilmore before the trade deadline. The first one being that Belichick gets the proper compensation. There’s no reason to trade Gilmore just for the sake of trading him. More than likely if Gilmore were to be shipped out prior to the trade deadline, then he would be worth more than a first round draft pick. The only team that would be interested in a player of his talent would be a team that considers themselves a Super Bowl contender. Because of this, a draft pick late in the first round can almost be considered a second round draft pick. Belichick will need to get more than a first round to be properly compensated for Gilmore, or he could just wait until after the season and try to trade him during the draft.
This isn’t a Jalen Ramsey situation where the Jacksonville jaguars were forced to make a move because of his toxic attitude in the locker room. From everything that we know, Gilmore is still one of the leaders of the room, he quietly goes about his business, and works hard to win games.
When you think of the Patriots team this year, and what they can bring forward into 2021, I don’t understand why so many fans are hell-bent on blowing up the team. When you can go into next season with guys like Chase Winovich, JC Jackson, and Stephon Gilmore, why would the patriots want to move on from any of those players, when it’s obvious the patriots aren’t that far away from being a competitive team again?
I think it would be a terrible idea to trade Gilmore at this point in time. I get that this is the worst season the patriots have had in 20 years, and that even people who cover this team aren’t really sure how to react to what we’re seeing on the field, that doesn’t mean that they need to just rush into making moves that don’t make sense. Because when you look at teams like the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Baltimore Ravens, and the New Orleans Saints, they have been competitive teams right along with the Patriots throughout the entire Tom Brady era. They are now Super Bowl contenders, as the patriots try to find their new identity. The only difference between those teams and the Patriots prior to this season, is that the Patriots never went through a difficult season, but most of those teams bounced back within one season, and became competitive again. The Patriots being such an organized, professional organization I see no reason that the patriots can’t be right back at it next year.
