Today, Daryl Morey was officially announced as the Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations. Formerly with the Houston Rockets, Morey is well-known for his usage of analytics and his desire to win. Despite never reaching the NBA Finals with the Rockets, Morey has a reputation as a man that will stop at nothing in order to find an edge.
SportsCastr News NBA’s Adam Armbrecht and Matt Brooks discussed the extension given to Sixers’ GM Elton Brand. Both were very confused by the decision: if you are hiring Morey, why are still keeping Brand in a position to control player personnel? If Morey is being brought in, what is there for Brand to do?
On their SportsCastr stream, Matt Brooks said that he thinks that the Sixers suffer from a lack of communication. With the hiring of Doc Rivers and Morey in such a short amount of time, it seems like Philadelphia does not have a set plan. Rivers, Morey, and Brand have all been the main decision makers for their teams over the past couple years. It will be interesting to see how they react when they disagree with eachother.
The most important decisions for Brand and Morey will revolve around the team’s two stars: Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons. Both players do not completely fit the mold of today’s NBA stars. The team must figure out how to use these two players, or perhaps one needs to leave Philadelphia.
The Miami Heat reached the NBA Finals as the 5th seed in the Eastern Conference. If the 76ers reach the playoffs again, it is clear that a team can come out of nowhere in the East. Morey, Brand, and Rivers hope to team up to bring the Sixers back to glory.Tags: 76ers, Ben Simmons, Daryl Morey, Doc Rivers, Elton Brand, Embiid, Heat, Houston Rockets, Joel Embiid, Miami Heat, Morey, NBA, NBA Finals, Philadelphia 76ers, Rockets, SCN, SCN NBA, Sixers, SportsCastr, SportsCastr News Last modified: November 2, 2020
