The New England Patriots are in a very unfamiliar position. Sitting at 2-5, Bill Belichick finds himself looking up at the AFC East second place Miami Dolphins, and the first place Buffalo Bills, instead of looking down on them like he has for most of his tenure as the Patriots head coach.

Through the years, Belichick has not given a lot to the press, but in a moment full transparency; Belichick gave a very candid response to a question about the Patriots lack of depth on their roster.
“I mean, look, we paid Cam Newton a million dollars. It’s obvious that we didn’t have any money. It’s nobody’s fault. That’s what we did the last five years. We sold out and won three Super Bowls, played in a fourth and played in an AFC Championship Game. This year we had less to work with. It’s not an excuse. It’s just a fact,” the head coach said Monday on WEEI 93.7
Belichick started this conversation last week when he was interviewed by his former offensive coordinator Charlie Wise.
“This is kind of the year that we’ve taken to, I would say, adjust our cap from the spending that we’ve had in accumulation of prior years. We just haven’t been able to have the kind of depth on our roster that we’ve had in some other years,” Belichick said, per Mike Reiss.
For the people who pay attention, this type of season was just a matter of time for the Patriots. Both Tom Brady and Antonio Brown are members of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, yet the Patriots are carrying a combined $18 million in dead cap between Brown and Brady. New England has a total of $26.4 million in dead cap this season.
Some of the Patriots depth is not just a lack of salary cap. Veteran player Dont’a Hightower, Patrick Chung, and Marcus Cannon, all opted out of the 2020 season.
The last time the Patriots had a losing record was Bill Belichick’s first year as the Patriots coach in the 2000 season. The 2000 season was also the last time the Patriots had a four game losing streak under Bill Belichick. Belichick has never lost more than four games as the Patriots head coach.Tags: New England Patriots, NFL, Patriots, SCNNFL Last modified: November 4, 2020
