My MLB Awards Ballots

Freddie Freeman

I do not have a vote in the election, as I’m about to turn 16, nor do I have a vote on the MLB Awards, given that I’m not one of a selected group of credentialed BBWAA members, but that doesn’t mean that I can’t show you why, how, and where the BBWAA went wrong, and show you who should win the 2020 MLB Awards. I’ll explain the numbers for Gold Gloves, but for everything else, the stats will speak for themselves.

GOLD GLOVES

AMERICAN LEAGUE

  • C: Yasmani Grandal, CHW
    • Grandal tied for the AL lead in Runs Extra Strikes, the Statcast framing metric, and also finished tied for second in DRS, 2nd in FRM from Fangraphs, 2nd in CSAA Runs, and led the AL in CDA from Baseball Prospectus. I could shout out Christian Vazquez as well.
  • 1B: Evan White, SEA
    • You could say Matt Olson, but White led the AL in DRS and UZR/150, while finishing 2nd in OAA by just 1 Out, and I’ll take White here.
  • 2B: Nicky Lopez, KC
    • League leading 6 Outs Above Average, a league leading 8 Defensive Runs Saved, however, he had poor UZR numbers, dragging down his case, but he still put up 3.3 UZR/150, which when paired with 6 OAA and 8 DRS makes his case stand out from Cesar Hernandez and everybody else.
  • 3B: Isiah Kiner-Falefa, TEX
    • Urshela did not get robbed Yankees fans, he had -1 OAA, while Kiner-Falefa led the AL with 4, and also led the AL in DRS with 8.
  • SS: Francisco Lindor, CLE
    • Lindor’s DRS doesn’t stand out like Correa or Crawford, but Lindor had more UZR than all of them as well as leading the American League in OAA.
  • LF: Alex Verdugo, BOS
    • Despite not playing his whole season in Left Field, Verdugo put up 1 OAA, 8 DRS, and 4.2 UZR in just 167 innings of the position. He was fantastic on defense wherever he went, and fends off Kyle Tucker and Robbie Grossman for the award.
  • CF: Kevin Kiermaier, TB
    • This is VERY close between Kiermaier, Jackie Bradley Jr., and Luis Robert, but Kiermaier’s 10 DRS and 7.7 UZR cancel out his still phenomenal 5 OAA (trailed JBJ and Robert in that stat)
  • RF: Joey Gallo, TEX
    • Joey Gallo has turned himself into an elite defender, leading the league with 12 DRS, 6.1 UZR, and 3 OAA, he takes a clean sweep of the defensive statistics, and therefore easily defeats all competition in the position.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

  • C: Omar Narvaez, MIL
    • He actually led the league in Runs Extra Strikes, with 5, as well as leading the league in CDA with 4.5, also led it in FRM from Fangraphs with 3.9, yes, this is OMAR NARVAEZ, a guy that was supposed to be the offensive catcher in Milwaukee, winning a Gold Glove in my book
  • 1B: Josh Fuentes, COL
    • 8 DRS at first base, league leader, 3.0 UZR, behind only Rizzo and Freeman, and 0 OAA, but he did all of this in about 2/5 the amount of innings as Freeman and Rizzo.
  • 2B: Kolten Wong, STL
    • Led the NL in UZR and DRS, as well as a decent 2 OAA, Wong wins over Adam Frazier by a small amount.
  • 3B: Nolan Arenado, COL
    • 15 DRS, 7 OAA, 8.5 UZR, enough said
  • SS: Fernando Tatis Jr.
    • Despite having pedestrian UZR and DRS numbers, Tatis dominated the OAA game with a league leading 7, putting him over Javier Baez, Dansby Swanson, and Trevor Story for this honor.
  • LF: Tyler O’Neill, STL
    • Another league leader in DRS, UZR, and OAA, this is an obvious choice
  • CF: Trent Grisham, SD
    • 6 OAA, 7.5 UZR, and 7 DRS, all amount to Bellinger absolutely not being robbed despite his higher OAA.
  • RF: Mookie Betts, LAD
    • It’s Mookie Betts, what did you expect?
