Is It Time for the Las Vegas Raiders to Enter the Playoff Conversation?

Derek Carr’s tenure with the Las Vegas (formerly Oakland) Raiders has been mostly forgettable. Marred by injury and missed opportunities, it seems that Carr’s future with the franchise is the most often discussed aspect of his career. This year, Jon Gruden and the Raiders have undergone a massive change in culture and performance.

SportsCastr News NFL’s Lawrence Owen analyzed the season for the 6-3 playoff contender. Like his Indianapolis Colts, Lawrence feels that the national media has not given the Raiders enough respect. Their 6 wins have not been against the bottom feeders of the league: with wins versus Kansas City, Cleveland, and New Orleans, it is clear that the Raiders are not just having a lucky season.

With 16 touchdowns and only two interceptions, Derek Carr is finally looking like the quarterback Jon Gruden always thought he could be. The 29-year-old’s 69.3% completion percentage and 240 Y/G have allowed the Raiders to expand their offensive playbook. On his SportsCastr stream, Lawrence also discusses other members of the team that have shined in the first half of the season.

After a lackluster middle of the season, second year running back Josh Jacobs has now rushed for 100+ yards in two of the last three Raider contests. Jacobs eight touchdowns on the year has already surpassed his mark of seven last year. Jacobs and Carr will hope to continue their hot play when they host Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday Night.

Sitting at second place in the AFC West, the Las Vegas Raiders are in a prime position to return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. A Carr injury prior to that game forced Connor Cook to quarterback the team, resulting in three interceptions and a first-round loss. If Carr can stay healthy, it looks like the Raiders will get a chance to return to the playoffs in 2021.
