Rich Get Richer: LA Lakers Fill Up Holes Through Free Agency

The Los Angeles Lakers are the reigning NBA Champions. After a hectic bubble period, LeBron and the Lakers showed that they were the true kings in Los Angeles. While they may have lost some key pieces so far in the offseason, Rob Pelinka has had no trouble retooling and finding new talent.

SportsCastr News NBA’s Adam Armbrecht and Keith McPherson discussed the NBA Free Agency period and the moves made by the Lakers. When Adrian Wojnarowski and Shams Charania began their weekend tweeting, the Lakers saw the departure of role players like Dwight Howard and Rajon Rondo. Danny Green had also departed earlier in the week, joining the Sixers in a trade.

On their SportsCastr stream, Adam and Keith described how the Lakers have made the most of these losses. In the past week, LA has added G Dennis Schroeder, G/F Wesley Matthews, and C Marc Gasol. In the biggest move of all, the Lakers acquired reigning Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell.

Formerly with the Clippers, Harrell’s build and skillset should pair perfectly with that of Lakers’ star Anthony Davis. In an era where teams are looking to close games with a smaller lineup, Davis and Harrell are the best of both worlds. As pointed out on the SportsCastr stream, both players can bang with the biggest bodies in the post, while also being quick enough to defend out on the perimeter.

Kawhi Leonard and Paul George were no doubt displeased to see their former teammate join their rival. On the other hand, the Clippers have brought in their own set of new talent: F/C Serge Ibaka and G Luke Kennard will be seeing valuable minutes in the fourth quarter for the Western Conference team. With their new additions, it seems that the biggest enemy to the Lakers will be a shortened offseason. However, if LeBron can maintain his high performance and durability, it seems as though the Lakers will maintain control of their conference.
