Patriots are still talking playoffs

The fan base has given up and many are ready to blow the team up. The media is declaring the end of the dynasty. Tom Brady fans are pointing fingers at Bill Belichick with a knowing grin. The season is over, and nobody should be talking about the playoffs. Trying telling the New England Patriots that.

“Playoffs are still possible. Anything is still possible as far as our goals, but I think it just starts with this week, going out, taking it” – Jonathan Jones

If you’re a Patriots fan, despite what you think about this team, this is exactly the attitude that you should want from the players and coaching staff. Many were shocked at the trade deadline when Belichick decided to trade for a receiver, rather than ship out players like Stephon Gilmore and Joe Thuney. But the message to the locker room and the fan base was obvious; Bill Belichick had not given up on the 2020 season.

Things are not looking good, and the chances of the 2020 New England Patriots (4-6) making a postseason run is improbable, teetering on impossible. But, with Trevor Lawrence no where near  possibility, the players in the Patriots locker room have the right attitude, and if it doesn’t happen for them this season, this never give up attitude will be instrumental to the 2021 season.

“I think if there ever comes a point in time where you lose faith in that, then the season’s over. If at any point — leadership, coaches, players, staff — if you lose belief then you might as well throw in the towel and I don’t think we’re anywhere near that right now. – Matthew Slater

In the offseason there was a lot of chatter about the Patriots “tanking” the season and picking one of the top quarterbacks available in the 2021 NFL Draft. It seemed like a reasonable idea, except that you would have to convince Bill Belichick, Devin McCourty, Cam Newton, Julian Edelman, J.C. Jackson, and the rest of New England’s locker room, that they need to lose. That’s just not in the Patriots DNA, and the comments coming from the locker room are telling that the Patriots players and coaches still believe that there are better things ahead.

“We’re going to remain confident in who we are and what we’ve done, We’ve got some decent football players around here that have done alright over the years. We’ll see at the end of the day whether that’s good enough or not, but right now, we’re just going to focus on taking things one day at a time and trying to go out and get better.” – Matthew Slater

Decent players is an understatement. Heading into last week’s game against the Houston Texans, nine Patriots were rated top 15 in the league at their respective positions according to PFF. The Patriots currently have 22 players on their roster that played for the Patriots two seasons ago when they defeated the Rams and won the Super Bowl. You don’t have to play in the NFL to know that once you get your hand on the Lombardi Trophy, you’re goal is to touch it again, these “decent” players, will still be focusing on getting back to the biggest stage in professional sports.
