Matt Patricia was fired as the head coach of the Detroit Lions on Saturday, and immediately people started asking if Patricia could reunite with the New England Patriots, where he served under Bill Belichick as the Patriots defensive coordinator for six years.
When Belichick was asked about it this week he said that his priority was fixing the mistake from the Patriots game against the Arizona Cardinals. Belichick also spoke about the Patriots current coaching staff and said that the defensive staff work really well together, and that they all have a lot of responsibilities. Belichick says that defensive coaches have all done a really good job since Patricia left.
Matt Patricia became the defensive coordinator in 2012 and that season the Patriots defense ranked 25th in the league. The defense actually performed worse in 2013 when they were ranked as the 26th worst defense. New England’s defense made a massive leap in 2014 ranking 13th, and then they were a top 10 ranking 9th in 2015 and 8th in 2016. A mass exodus and season ending injury to Dont’a Hightower saw the Patriots defense plummet to the 29th worst in the NFL that season.
2017 was also the same season that saw the Philadelphia Eagle defeat the Patriots 41-33 in the Super Bowl. The Patriots defense allowed Nick Foles who was playing for the injured Carson Wentz to put up huge numbers in the game. Foles threw for 378 yards and three touchdowns. The Eagles also put 164 yards on the ground, and former Patriot LeGarrett Blount punched in a touchdown. All together the Patriots defense under Matt Patricia surrendered 538 yards of total offense in the loss.
In 2017 Patricia left the Patriots to take the Lions head coaching job, and Brian Flores took over as the Patriots defensive coordinator. The Patriots defense ranked 21st that year, but had a spectacular game against the Las Angeles Rams in the Super Bowl holding on of the most explosive offenses in the NFL to three points and only 260 yards of offense, sacking Rams starting quarterback Jared Goff four times.
Flores took over as head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2018, and the Patriots didn’t have an official defense coordinator, but Bill Belichick recently let it slip that it was that his son Steve has been making the defensive play calls. In 2019 the Patriots had the number one defense in the NFL.
2020 has been a little different as the Patriots defense is ranked 16th, but the decline shouldn’t be placed on the coaching staff. The Patriots lost key members to their defense in the offseason including Kyle Van Noy (MIA), Elandon Roberts (MIA), and Jamie Collins (DET). Duron Harmon was traded to Detroit. Patrick Chung and Dont’a Hightower both opted out for this season because of COVID-19.Tags: Detroit Lions, Lions, Matt Patricia, New England Patriots, NFL, Patriots, SCN, SCN NFL, SportsCastr, SportsCastr News Last modified: December 1, 2020
